Rainbow Wahine Give Sooners The Boot, 1-0

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 decision over Oklahoma in the consolation match of the OHANA Hotel's & Resorts No Ka Oi Monday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer. Freshman striker Ambree Ako scored the game-winner in the 68th minute off a UH free kick.

For the second straight match the Rainbow Wahine (1-1) controlled the action, playing a furious pace, maintaining possession and generating more shots on goal than their opponents. But unlike Friday night's match against Washington, the Rainbow Wahine saw their effort pay dividends with a victory.

UH dominated the first 35 minutes of play against the Sooners (0-2). The Rainbow Wahine held the Oklahoma without a shot, while launching 10 shots of their own. Hawai`i nearly got on the board less than four minutes into the match, but Ako's shot from the top of the box bounced off the far post. UH also saw a Kelli-Anne Chang shot skip just wide of the net in the 23rd minute and a Vanessa Bailey attempt hit the crossbar eight minutes later.

Oklahoma game to life in the final 10 minutes of the first half as Tanesha Duncan gave a spark off the bench. Duncan had two breakaway opportunities, but was stuffed on both occasions by UH goalkeeper Kori Lu to keep the match scoreless going into half.

Hawai`i finally got on the board when they were awarded a free kick near the top of the 18-yard box in the 68th minute. Ako sent a right-footed rocket that ricocheted off an Oklahoma defender and past a sprawling Sooner goalkeeper in the left side of the net. Oklahoma's best opportunity in the second half came in the 63rd minute, but Duncan's blast bounced off the left post. The Rainbow Wahine, who kept the pressure on the whole match, ended with a 19-7 advantage on shots.

UH returns to action on Friday, Sept. 1 when they take on Kent State in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
