Six-Goal Second Quarter Paces No. 1 USC Past No. 5 Hawai`i

LOS ANGELES - No. 1 USC netted six goals in the second quarter and lifted the Trojans by No. 5 Hawai`i, 14-7, today in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the McDonald's Swim Stadium.

The Trojans (23-0, 11-0 MPSF) broke a 3-3 tie after the first quarter recording six goals in the second and added another four in the third to knock off the Rainbow Wahine for the second time this season. USC won the earlier match up, 13-5, at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational.

The Women of Troy and the Rainbow Wahine played a tight match through the first period. Hawai`i took the first lead of the game, only to have USC net three unanswered goals to lead, 3-1. Hawai`i tied the game with Kelly Mason shooting one in with 55 seconds left to knot it at three at the end of one.

Again, the Women of Troy took back the advantage with back-to-back goals for a 5-3 lead in the second. Hawai`i made it 5-4, but USC caught fire and went on an 8-0 scoring blitz to go up 13-4 going to the final period.

Hawai`i got a four-goal effort from freshman Kelly Mason, while Iefke Van Belkum added two and Kristy Bagnall contributed one.

The Trojans were led by Anna Pardo and Kami Craig, as each scored a hat-trick apiece. Patty Cardenas and Lauren Wenger also scored twice each.
