#5 Hawai`i Edges #4 LMU For Second Time This Season

LOS ANGELES - All-American Iefke Van Belkum scored with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter to propel No. 5 Hawai`i past No. 4 Loyola Marymount, 6-5, this afternoon in a non-conference match at LMU's Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.

UH snapped LMU's 13-match win streak, knocking the Lions off for the second time this season. UH defeated LMU, 7-4, at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational back on Feb. 25. The win should elevate Hawai`i to the No. 4 spot in next week's Top 20 poll, which will be released Wednesday, April 19.

The Lions came out firing early but Hawai`i All-American goalie Meike De Nooy came up big, making six of her nine saves in the first half.

The Rainbow Wahine never trailed in the match. UH's Kelly Mason put UH on top with 1:32 remaining in the first, but LMU's Rosanna Tomiuk tied it on their next possession.

Van Belkum and Anna Sieprath netted two quick goals to open the second quarter and gave UH a 3-1 advantage. LMU's Katie Hicks cut the deficit in half with a score at the 2:23 mark as UH went to halftime up 3-2.

Each team added a goal in the third quarter by LMU's Hicks and UH's Mason.

With Hawai`i holding on to a one-goal, 4-3, lead heading into the fourth quarter, LMU's Christine Robinson tied the game at 4-4 with 4:10 left. In what was a trend all game for Hawai`i, they answered on the very next possession when Kristy Bagnall scored with 3:47 to put UH up, 5-4.

LMU's Tomiuk scored her second goal of the game with 2:27 remaining to tie it at 5-5. The Lions managed a defensive stop on Hawai`i's next possession and looked to have a break. However, a pass to Robinson skipped long and Hawai`i countered quickly as Van Belkum found herself open down the middle of the pool and hit a lob over LMU goalie Kate Murray to give the Rainbow Wahine the 6-5 lead with 1:43 remaining. The Lions could not get the equalizer as they fell to 22-4 on the season, with two of the four setbacks coming against Hawai`i, who improved to 12-8.

The Rainbow Wahine take on No. 1 USC (22-0, 10-0 MPSF) Friday afternoon. Then UH plays at Long Beach State on Saturday morning, followed up by an afternoon contest against Cal State Northridge (@LBSU) to close out the regular season.
