Rainbows Fall To San Jose State 7-5 In 12 Innings

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (22-9, 0-3 WAC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (20-10, 3-1) 7-5 in 12 innings at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Darrell Fisherbaugh (2-2) got the loss for UH while Steve Jones (2-0) took the win for the Spartans.

Elijah Christensen led the way at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three RBI and a double. Jonathan Hee had a 2-for-6 game with a run in his return to the UH lineup. Richard Olsen gave up just one hit in 3.2 innings, striking out four in relief.

Christensen put the Rainbows ahead in the second inning, doubling in Matthew Inouye, giving UH a 1-0 lead. But SJSU came alive in the third, scoring three runs, all with two outs, to put the Spartans ahead 3-1. San Jose State then put up a two-run inning in the fifth, chasing out UH starter Steven Wright after striking out six in 4.1 innings.

But the 'Bows didn't give up. Justin Frash started the scoring in the seventh with a RBI-single. Inouye then drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly before Christensen again came up with the big hit, driving in two on a RBI-single to centerfield, tying the game at five.

Both teams had their chances late. SJSU left two runners on in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings. Hawai`i ended up leaving 14 totals runners on base. The Spartans came up with the final runs of the game in the top of the 12th, scoring two to make the final score 7-5.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
