Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i got 18 kills apiece from both Lauri Hakala and Jose Delgado as the No. 4 ranked Warriors defeated No. 9 UCLA tonight in four - 30-25, 30-19, 28-30, 30-24 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

With the win, Hawai`i runs its win streak to eight straight and improves to 12-4 overall and in the third place in the conference at 10-3. UCLA snaps its two-match win streak and falls to 12-10 and 5-8 in the MPSF.

In Game 1, the Bruins led early 3-2, before UH rattled off three straight points and never lost the lead to win, 30-25. UH hit .389 in that first game led by Hakala and Delgado's four kills each.

The Bruins led again early in Game 2, 4-2, before the Warriors reeled off another three straight points and never relinquished the lead, cruising to a 30-19 victory. UH's block was the difference in the second game, notching six team snuffs.

Game 3 saw UCLA jump out to a quick 5-0 lead before UH finally knotted it up at 10 and took the lead the very next point. The Bruins reclaimed the lead at 21-20, but again UH came storming back and led 28-25 looking for the sweep. However, UCLA got kills from Dennis Gonzalez, two UH attack errors, and finished it off with kills from Nick Scheftic and Steve Klosterman to come from behind and win, 30-28.

Hawai`i found its second wind in Game 4 leading out of the blocks, 4-1, and going on to claim a 30-24 victory and the match.

The Warriors out hit (.313 to .178), out blocked (13 to 6.5), and out dug (58 to 53) the Bruins.

UH got at least four blocks apiece from five different players led by Dio Dante's seven. Setter Brian Beckwith had the UH offense running like a well-oiled machine, dishing out 58 assists, while five UH hitters racked up at least eight kills each.

UCLA was led offensively by Scheftic's 14 kills and five blocks.

The two teams pair off again Saturday night with a 7:05 p.m. first serve.
