STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's water polo team opened the 2006 campaign with a bang this afternoon, as the No. 4 Rainbow Wahine blitzed Pacific, 19-3, at the Chris Kjeldsen Swimming Pool in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
UH jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 8-1 at the half. Then a seven-goal third quarter put the game out of reach.
Hawai`i (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) had 10 of its 13 athletes record goals, including seven with multiple-goal efforts.
Junior 2-meter defense Amy Logan and freshman 2-meter Sabrina Cook led Hawai`i with three goals apiece. Iefke Van Belkum, Jennifer Hohl, Katie Thompson, Kelly Mason, and Kristy Bagnall scored two each. Mari Yogi, Megan O'Linn, and Brittany Dames scored single goals.
Junior All-America goalie Meike De Nooy picked up three saves, while dishing out two assists and grabbing three steals.
Pacific (0-2, 0-2 MPSF) got all three goals from Kellie Fletcher, while goalie Sara Mirels had eight saves.
The Rainbow Wahine are at No. 6 California (1-0) Friday before participating in the Stanford Invitational Feb. 11-12.
