Box Score
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hawaii picked up its second straight road win with an impressive 76-61 victory over San Jose State Saturday night at the Event Center. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 13-7 overall and moved into a tie for fourth in the conference with a 4-5 WAC mark.
Janevia Taylor tied her career-high with 23 points to lead three Hawaii players in double-figures. Amy Sanders added 15 points and Tanya Smith chipped in with her second straight double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds) as UH snapped a five-game losing streak to the Spartans. The Rainbow Wahine not only picked up its first win over the Spartans in three years, but coupled with its win at Idaho Thursday night, also completed its first WAC road sweep during the same span.
San Jose State (10-9, 5-3 WAC) remained in third place in the WAC despite losing for the third time in its last four games. Lamisha Augustine dropped in a team-high 22 points in the loss, although most of those came with the game already at hand. Amber Jackson scored 14 points, despite missing the final eight minutes of the game due to injury.
The Rainbow Wahine led for the majority of the game and sealed the win in the second half, when they converted 20 free throws. UH began to break away midway in the first half with an 8-0 run that put them up 22-14. The Rainbow Wahine would not look back, taking a seven-point lead into the locker room and building a double-digit lead with a 9-2 run to open the second half. Hawaii led by as many as 18 points and were never seriously threatened in the second frame.
Hawaii played stifling defense, limiting the Spartans to just 32 percent shooting, and crashed the boards with a 45-36 advantage. UH also finished the game 22-of-34 from the free throw line.
UH returns home to Honolulu and will next face first-place Fresno State on Thursday, February 9. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
