Record Finish For UH Track At WAC Indoor

NAMPA, Idaho - The Hawai'i women's track and field team concluded the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship with a school record seventh place finish and 52 total team points. The previous best finish for the Rainbow Wahine was ninth and 38 points by last season's squad.

On the final day of competition on Saturday, UH tallied 20 team points thanks to a second place finish by Emily Sheppard in the high jump. The freshman set a new school record with a leap of 5-7.75 (1.72m) and finished behind Utah State's Lacy Hulbert (5-8.75, 1.75m).

Junior Mallory Gilbert placed fourth in the high jump (5-5.25, 1.66m) giving the Rainbow Wahine 13 points in the event.

Sophomore Meghan Weaver placed fourth in the shot put with a personal best and school record throw of 47-4.25 (14.43m). Freshman Annett Wichmann, who two days earlier won silver in the pentathlon, placed eighth in the shot put (45-11.25, 14.00m) and eighth in the triple jump (39-0.5, 11.90m), which was also a new UH mark.

At this year's WAC Championship, the Rainbow Wahine took home four medalist honors, compared to two last season. Louisiana Tech won the women's competition with a total team score of 131 points. Idaho finished second (90) followed by Utah State (85).

This meet concludes the indoor season. Wichmann still has a chance to compete at the NCAA Championship, as her performance in the pentathlon was an NCAA provisional mark.
