HONOLULU - The No. 6 Hawai`i Warriors hit .484 on the night sweeping No. 4 Long Beach State in front of 3,382 tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
Outside hitters Jose Delgado, Matt Carere, and Lauri Hakala all slammed down 13 kills apiece in pacing the Warriors. Hakala hit .684 while Carere was just as hot at a .571 clip.
Game 1 teetered with UH taking a 15-14 lead at the midway point before going on a mini 6-3 run to take a 21-17 advantage.
A Delgado service error and a kill by Dio Dante brought the score to 22-18. Head coach Mike Wilton then inserted backup setter Sean Carney to serve for Maulia La Barre. The 'Bows then scored five-straight points during Carney's serve to take command of the game and eventually win 30-21.
In Game 2, UH jumped out to a lead of 3-1 and extended it to 15-10 at the media timeout. Hawai`i would go up by as many as seven points at 23-16 when LBSU mounted a comeback.
The 49ers closed the gap to 29-25 before Francisco Valdez's attack error gave UH a 30-25 win and go up two games to none.
In Game 3, Long Beach came out strong taking a 10-8 advantage on a kill by Duncan Budinger. But the Warriors reclaimed the lead for good at 11-10 after a LBSU attack error, a Hakala ace, and a Hakala kill.
UH ended up scoring five of six points in the stretch to lead 13-11. The two teams would trade points with UH leading 19-18 when the Warriors went on a 11-4 run to close out the match, 30-22.
UH hit .484 on the night to LBSU's .193. Hawai`i's Brian Beckwith dished out 43 assists, while La Barre snuffed a match-high seven blocks.
Robert Tarr led the LBSU attack with a match-high 16 kills, while setter Tyler Hildebrand handed out 37 assists.
Hawai`i improved to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the MPSF, while Long Beach State fell to 11-3 and 6-2.
The two teams close out the series Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
