No. 4 Hawai`i Claims Fifth Place At Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The fourth ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team regrouped today to sweep its pair of matches on the final day of the Stanford Invitational held at the Avery Aquatic Center and capture fifth place.

The Rainbow Wahine finished off its final match in pool play earlier this morning with a victory over No. 6 California, 8-7, to advance to the fifth place match against San Jose State.

In the fifth place match, Hawai`i (3-3) scored quickly taking a 3-0 lead with two power-play goals by Kelly Mason and another 6-on-5 goal by Katie Thompson. Thompson added her second netter before halftime to give UH a 4-3 lead.

The second half was dominated by UH scoring three goals in the third and five more in the fourth to put the game out of reach, 12-5. Mason led the UH charge with four goals in the match. UH All-American goalie Meike De Nooy picked up 12 saves in the victory.

Earlier in the morning, the Rainbow Wahine got revenge on No. 6 California in the final pool play match, 8-7.

Hawai`i scored four times in the first quarter on three power-play goals, including a pair of scores from Mason. UH took a 5-4 lead at the half and held off a late charge by the Golden Bears to pick up their first win in pool play and advance to the fifth place match against San Jose State.

UH was led by Mason and Kristy Bagnall who netted three goals apiece. Anna Sieprath and Brittany Dames each scored once in the win.

Hawai`i has next week off before emabarking on its second road trip, which consists of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at Arizona State, Tuesday, Feb. 21, and at San Diego State, Thursday, Feb. 23. UH then participates at the Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26.
