RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team's season came to a close with a 3-0 loss to Nevada in the opening round of the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday night at Mackay Stadium. All-WAC forward Samantha Miller scored two goals to help advance the Wolf Pack to Friday's semifinal versus Utah State and end UH's year at 8-11-2.
In a case of deja vu, the third-seeded Wolf Pack (12-4-3) scored two goals in a span of 65 seconds early in the match to win for the second straight time over sixth-seed Hawai`i. Less than a week earlier in Reno, Nevada scored a pair of goals in the first 2:40 of the match en route to a 5-0 regular season win. After beating Nevada in six previous meetings, UH lost its last two matches to the Wolf Pack by an 8-0 margin.
Miller scored her first goal at the 7:40 mark when she received a pass from Miranda Montejo in the right corner of the penalty box. Miller than maneuvered inside and fired a shot from 16 yards that deflected off a UH defender and redirected past goalkeeper UH Kori Lu to just inside the far post.
Miller scored again a little more than a minute later when she got behind the UH defense off a feed from Devin Noe and slotted a low shot past Lu. The Wolf Pack got its third score off an own goal in the 48th minute.
While UH qualified for the tournament for the sixth straight, the loss marked the fifth straight year that the Rainbow Wahine failed to advance past its first match. The Rainbow Wahine, who started the season strong at 6-2-2, finished the season in a tailspin with five straight losses and nine in its last 11 matches. At 8-11-2, UH ended with its first losing mark in six years.
