Warriors Roll On To 61-17 Victory Over Louisiana Tech

Box Score

HONOLULU - Heisman hopeful quarterback Colt Brennan threw for 406 yards (27-of-40) and four touchdowns in his usual three quarters of work to help Hawai'i to its seventh straight win, 61-17, over Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

The Hawai'i (8-2, 6-1 WAC) offense racked up a season-high 618 total yards, without starting running back Nate Ilaoa who took the night off to rest a nagging injury. Warrior receivers Davone Bess and Jason Rivers both finished with more than 100 receiving yards. Bess led all receivers with seven catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while Rivers hauled in four passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

But the Warrior defense commanded respect, holding its opponent to less than 20 points for the third straight week, and forcing two turnovers, both interceptions, to spark a 28-point third quarter.

Louisiana Tech (3-7, 1-4 WAC) enjoyed a 10-9 lead early in the second quarter, but not for long. Hawai'i scored the next 17 straight points to take a 26-10 lead at the break, and then erupted for 28 points in the third quarter, the most this season, to build an insurmountable 54-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Brennan drove 73 yards and ran it in from a yard out to score his third rushing touchdown of the season the opening possession of the second half. Warrior cornerback Gerard Lewis intercepted Tech's Zac Champion, and one play later, Brennan hit Bess for a 19-yard touchdown.

Less than two minutes later, Hawai'i got the ball back and Brennan found Ian Sample (6-45) for a three-yard score. The Warriors scored again when Reagan Mauia forced his way three-yards into the end zone, after Myron Newberry intercepted Champion.

Brennan also led the Warriors in rushing with 60 yards on six carries and added four touchdowns to his NCAA record chase. He now has 43 on the season, 11 short of the record of 54 with four games left on the schedule. Mauia finished with 52 yards on six attempts. Linebacker Adam Leonard led the Warriors with six tackles. Hawai'i defenders were irritating Champion all night long, logging a season-high five sacks (-49) and recording six hurries.

The Warriors will wrap up WAC play Saturday night against San Jose State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. The Spartans, coached by former Warrior skipper Dick Tomey, lost a heartbreaker (23-20) against league-leading Boise State earlier in the day.
