No. 15 Rainbow Wahine Take WAC Lead With Sweep Over Nevada

HONOLULU - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (11-4, 5-0 WAC) swept through the Nevada Wolf Pack (10-7, 4-1) 30-23, 30-20 and 30-25 in front of a crowd of 7,118 at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday, breaking a tie between the two teams at the top of the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Jamie Houston led the way, hitting .417 with 18 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Kari Gregory posted 12 kills, four blocks and five digs while hitting .391. Sarah Mason went for 11 kills, six digs and four aces while Juliana Sanders had six kills and three blocks. Kanoe Kamana`o added 46 assists, bringing her career-total to 5,505, putting her second in career assists in the WAC record book.

Game one was close at the start as UH held just a slight 15-13 edge heading into the media timeout. But the Rainbow Wahine responded well, going on a 10-2 run to get their lead to 24-15. UN's Karly Sipherd posted four kills in a 5-2 run that got the Wolf Pack within 26-20. But it wasn't enough as a kill by Gregory ended game one 30-23.

After falling behind 5-3 at the start of game two, UH used a 6-1 spurt to go ahead 9-6. Nevada tied the score at 9-9, only to see UH score six of the next seven, holding a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. The Pack continued to fight as they were behind 22-18, before UH made their run to end it, scoring eight of the next 10 to end the game 30-20.

Mason posted two aces on her first serve to lead UH to a 4-1 edge at the start of game three. The Hawai`i lead got to 17-12 when Nevada made their run, scoring 10 of the next 12 points, to hold a 22-19 advantage. But the Rainbow Wahine responded with one final push, going on a 8-1 run, taking back the lead at 28-24, eventually taking it 30-25 on a kill by Mason.

The Rainbow Wahine will next host Boise State, tomorrow, at 7 p.m. HST, before taking the teams' second road trip, to Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State.
