MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team began defense of its Western Athletic Conference title with a 4-0 shutout of Idaho Friday afternoon at Wicks Field. UH snapped a season-long three-match losing streak and improved to 7-5-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC with the win.
After a sluggish start, the Rainbow Wahine poured it on in the second half when they recorded all four of its goals and out-shot the Vandals 20-5. Taryn Fukuroku scored two goals, while Kelli-Anne Chang and Ambree Ako also scored for the Rainbow Wahine, who won their WAC opener for the sixth straight year.
The Vandals, winless at 0-13, played the final 40 minutes of the match one short after Maria Madeira was issued a red card for dragging down Ako on a UH breakaway. All 18 players on the travel roster saw action for the Rainbow Wahine.
Despite out-shooting Idaho, 27-8, it took nearly two-thirds of the match for UH to break through. Hawai`i finally scored in the 64th minute when Kelli-Anne Chang punched one in from close range following a cross by Emily Chun from the right flank. The Rainbow Wahine scored again less than five minutes later off a goal by Ako, her first goal since the second match of the season.
Fukuroku finished off the UH scoring by finishing a close-range shot in the 80th minute off a cross by Jessica Domingo, then scoring on a header after an indirect kick by Julia Siljestrom. Fukuroku, who also added an assist in the win, posted her second multiple-goal performance in the last three matches. The sophomore striker also scored two goals in a 4-2 loss last Sunday at San Diego. She leads the team with eight goals, four assists and 20 points
The Rainbow Wahine conclude its four-match road swing with match versus Boise State on Sunday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. MDT.
