LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount handed the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team its third straight loss, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Rainbow Wahine end the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6-5-2 mark.
UH went toe-to-toe with the Lions (7-1-2), ranked nationally in two polls, for more than 60 minutes. Yet for the second straight match the Rainbow Wahine suffered an ill-fated second half. Two days after surrendering three second-half goals to San Diego, UH gave up two goals in a 65 second span in the second half in falling to LMU.
Lauren Shanklin scored the first goal at the 65:02 mark, while Jamie Bell scored the second goal at 66:07. The Lions won its fourth straight match, despite being out-shot by the Rainbow Wahine, 12-11. UH also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.
After an uneventful first half, the action picked up in the second half. The Rainbow Wahine had a chance to go up on the Lions in the 59th minute when Ambree Ako's shot from just inside the box bounced off the crossbar. LMU scored a little more than five minutes later when UH failed to clear the ball deep in its own territory. Shanklin settled the ball in traffic and sent a right-footed shot low to the left corner of the goal that escaped the grasp of a diving Kori Lu.
The Lions struck again a minute later when Stefanie Baduria sent a diagonal through ball to Jamie Bell just past midfield. Bell dribbled toward goal and chipped the ball over Lu for the second goal of the match.
Hawai`i continues its four-match road swing with its Western Athletic Conference opener at Idaho on Friday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. PST.
