FRESNO, Calif. - Antonea Lugo scored the golden goal 27 seconds into the first overtime period to lift Fresno State to a 1-0 win over Hawai`i Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. The win gave the Bulldogs its first-ever Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship, while handing UH its fourth straight loss.
Two days after its worst loss in eight years and playing without team captain and field general Jessica Domingo, UH gave a spirited effort against the top team in the conference but would fall short. The Rainbow Wahine, who entered the match having qualified for the upcoming WAC Tournament, end its regular-season schedule with a 8-10-2 record overall and finished sixth in the WAC with a 2-5 mark.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs, the 2005 WAC Tournament champions improved to 12-5-2, and 6-0-1. With its shutout of Hawai`i, Fresno State also set a new conference record by not allowing a single goal in seven WAC matches this year.
The winning-goal came moments into the overtime period when Aubrey Tennant made a run down the right flank and crossed the ball to the mouth of the UH goal where Lugo finished off a close-range shot. The Bulldogs out-shot Hawai`i, 16-4, for the match, including 9-0 in the first half.
Despite the disparity in shots, UH goalkeeper Kori Lu kept the Rainbow Wahine in the match with an outstanding performance. The sophomore posted a season-high seven saves, stopping numerous threats by the Bulldogs. Lu stuffed Erika Sugano on a breakaway in the 63rd minute and saved a header in the front of the goal by Nicole Gutierrez with 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Rainbow Wahine next head for Reno, Nev., and the 2006 WAC Tournament, Nov. 2-5. The sixth-seed Rainbow Wahine will face third-seed and host Nevada, a team that defeated UH, 5-0, on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PST on Thursday, Nov. 2.
