Rainbow Wahine Drop Heartbreaker To Utah State

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team suffered its second crushing defeat in conference play with a 2-1 loss to Utah Monday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Dana Peart scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Aggies in a match rescheduled following Sunday's earthquake that hit the islands.

For the second time in the last three matches, the Rainbow Wahine (8-7-2, 2-2 WAC) out-shot, and for the most part out-played its opponent, but found themselves on the short end. Last week in Boise, UH doubled the Broncos in shots but allowed two goals on three shots in the second half to fall 3-2. History repeated itself Monday night as the Aggies (7-7-1, 2-0-1) managed just two shots on the Rainbow Wahine in the second half, but scored on both.

The first Aggie goal came in the 66th minute when Charity Weston, who scored two goals in the Aggies win over UH last year, stole the ball from a UH defender in the box and nailed a low left-footer into the right corner of the goal.

UH had quality opportunities throughout the match and finally cashed in on a spectacular header by Kelli-Anne Chang to even the score just five minutes later. Taryn Fukuroku sent a pass to the left flank to Alexis Choi. Choi then lofted a cross that found a flying Kelli-Anne Chang near the far post for the equalizer.

Utah State, however, got the last word when Peart scored at the 88:18 mark. The play started when Charlsie Harries chipped the ball over the UH defense. Peart ran down the ball and beat UH goalkeeper Kori Lu to the punch, heading the ball over Lu, who came off her line. The ball sailed toward the open net, before Peart kicked it in for good measure.

The Aggies won despite being out-shot, 12-7, including 7-2 in the second half. The loss was just UH's third in the last 20 WAC home matches.

UH next plays its final home match of the season on Sunday, Oct. 22 when it faces first-place San Jose State. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. Seniors Brittney Aiwohi and Kelly McCloskey will be honored at the conclusion of the match.
