Kelli-Anne Chang scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute to give the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team a 1-0 victory over Louisiana Tech Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH improved to 8-6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference with the win.
Chang scored on an incredible individual effort. After receiving the ball on the right flank, the sophomore midfielder raced past a pair of La Tech defenders before cutting back to the middle of the field. She then made her way to the middle of the box where she again eluded two Lady Techsters. Chang appeared to be stopped by a third defender in the box, but her determination allowed her to gather her own deflection and fire a left-footed shot over goalkeeper Jill Medigovich.
The goal was Chang's sixth of the year and her fourth game-winner. It was also the only score of the match, despite Hawai`i's repeated attacks on goal. UH out-shot the Lady Techsters 17-2, and peppered Medigovich with nine shots on goal, including seven in the second half. Medigovich finished with seven saves on the night.
After going into the break in scoreless tie, the Rainbow Wahine stepped up its attack with 11 second-half shots and did not allow a single La Tech shot in the second frame. Both of the Lady Techsters shots came off set pieces in the first half and they would not sniff the goal again.
La Tech (4-6-2, 0-2 WAC) remains winless in nine WAC matches dating back to last year. UH , meanwhile, posted its eighth shutout of the year, including its second in three WAC matches, while Kori Lu recorded her fifth solo shutout.
The Rainbow Wahine next face Utah State on Sunday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
