Spartans Rally Past Rainbow Wahine, 5-2

LOS GATOS, Calif. - The Hawai`i women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to San Jose State, Friday, at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 0-2 on their season-opening road four-match road trip through northern California.

UH jumped off to a great start by sweeping all three of the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, juniors Kana Aikawa and Samanta Cappella defeated the team of Elke Harms and Amber Silverstone, 8-3. Sophomore Julia Sandborn and freshman Erin Katayama beat Silvana Dukic and Sanda Hadzisabic, 8-2, at the No. 2 court and the dual of sophomore Chloe Bihag and junior Florence Wasko defeated Courtney Koenigsfeld and Ashley Tavita, 8-5 at No. 3.

The Spartans rallied and captured five of six singles matches, at the No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 positions, to earn the team victory. Aikawa dropped a tough, winnable match against Koenigsfeld at the No. 1 court, 7-5, 6-4. The lone Rainbow Wahine singles win came at the No. 6 position by Sandborn, who defeated Dana Popescu, 6-1, 6-4.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their four-match California road trip with dual matches against San Francisco on Sunday, and Pacific on Monday.
