STANFORD - In the first dual match of the California road trip, the University of Hawai`i women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the defending national champion and No.1 ranked Stanford Cardinal, Thursday, at the Taube Tennis Center.
The Cardinal won the doubles point by winning all three matches. In a close, hard fought battle, the team of sophomore Chloe Bihag and junior Florence Wasko at the No. 3 position dropped an 8-5 decision to Megan Doheny and Jessica Leck.
In singles play, the defending national champions won all six matches. Alice Barnes defeated junior Kana Aikawa, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position and fellow junior Samanta Cappella dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Jessica Nguyen at the No. 4 court. Bihag lost to Anne Yelsey 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 court and Wasko was defeated by Leila Hodzic 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 position. Freshman Erin Katayama lost a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Whitney Deason at No. 3 and Julia Sandborn was defeated by Joanna Kao, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. The Rainbow Wahine lost to Stanford last November in Waikoloa, 7-0.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their four-match California road trip with dual matches against San Jose State on Friday, San Francisco on Sunday, and No. 63 ranked Pacific on Monday.
