Rainbow Wahine End Skid With Win Over Utah State

Box Score

HONOLULU -- Hawai`i got back on the winning track while also bagging a historic victory with a 61-48 decision over Utah State Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine picked up the program's 500th all-time win and ended a four-game losing streak to improve to 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the WAC.

Janevia Taylor led UH with a season-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and third of her career. Taylor fell two points and two rebounds shy of tying her career-highs in both categories. Brittany Grice added 18 points as UH won their first game since January 5, a span of three weeks.

The Aggies (1-15, 0-6), meanwhile, lost their tenth straight game and remained winless in conference action. The meeting was the first between the team in nearly 26 years and the first as WAC opponents. Despite the Aggies' record, the game was not easy by any means for the Rainbow Wahine. UH led for the majority of the game, but held a slim three point advantage at the break. UH finally broke away midway through the second half, when they built a double-digit lead.

Things got off to a sloppy start, as the teams combined for more turnovers (11) than points (7) in the game's first seven minutes. UH's first-half offense basically came through two players as Grice and Taylor combined for 25 of the team's 29 first-half points. UH turned it on in the second half, holding the Aggies to just 25 percent shooting and settled down on offense, committing just six turnovers. Amy Sanders did not have a good shooting night but tied her career-high with seven assists as the Rainbow Wahine assisted on 19 of their 24 field goals.

Next up for Hawaii is a matchup with Nevada, a squad UH defeated earlier this month in Reno. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
