Louisiana Tech Turns Back UH In Overtime, 71-66

Box Score

HONOLULU - Hawai`i and Louisiana Tech went to toe-to-toe for more than 40 minutes before the Lady Techsters pulled off a 71-66 overtime win Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The loss snapped Hawaii's eight-game win streak and dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the WAC.

For the second straight meeting the Rainbow Wahine and Lady Techsters engaged in an overtime battle, but this time it was Louisiana Tech who chalked up the win. The Lady Techsters (11-3, 3-0) won their sixth straight and remained undefeated in WAC play as Tasha Williams led five Lady Techsters in double-digits with a game-high 18 points.

Pam Tambini led four Rainbow Wahine in double-figures with 16 points. Alofa Toiaivao recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Grice posted 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Amy Sanders, who missed her third start this year due to illness, still managed to score 10 points in 34 minutes of action.

La Tech came out of the gates strong and led by as many as 11 points, 21-10, just 10 minutes into the game. But UH battled back, and after a 16-3 run, took its first lead of the game, 26-24, on a Grice bucket with 5:45 left in the first half. At halftime the Lady Techsters held to a slim 33-31 advantage.

The second half was back-and-forth throughout with neither team leading by more than four points. UH trailed 56-52 with 2:30 remaining, but a Pam Tambini layup with 1:34 knotted the game, 58-58. The Rainbow Wahine had a chance to take the lead with 30 seconds left, but a Sanders attempt was stuffed by two Lady Techsters. With the final possession in regulation, Louisiana Tech also failed to convert as Ty Moore's layup at the buzzer fell short.

A Toiaivao jumper put the Rainbow Wahine up, 60-59, just 47 seconds in to the overtime period, but the Lady Techsters scored seven straight points and never looked back in notching its 15th win over Hawaii in 16 all-time meetings.

UH out-shot (37%-33%), out-rebounded (54-48) and out-blocked (10-6) Louisiana Tech, but the Lady Techester managed to get to the free throw line 32 times, converting on 20. UH, meanwhile, was just 8-of-14 from the foul line. The Lady Techsters also forced 24 UH turnovers.

Hawai`i looks to rebound on Saturday in its second straight home game when they face WAC newcomer New Mexico State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
