SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UCSB scored all of its goals in the first half and cruised to a 3-1 win over Hawaii Wednesday night at Harder Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 2-4-1 with their second straight loss.
Freshman midfielder Genelle Ives scored a goal and assisted on two others to give the Gauchos (4-0) their third straight win and avenge last year's home loss to the Rainbow Wahine in overtime.
UCSB struck first in the 15th minute when Darci Qwartz one-timed a cross from the left flank by Ives. The pair hooked up again five minutes later this time with Qwartz feeding Ives in the middle of the box. Ives chest trapped the ball then sent a right-footer that hit the left post before skidding into the goal. The Gauchos third goal came off a rebound when Katie Smith scored an open-net goal from the right side, following a collision by Ives and Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Kori Lu.
UH managed just three shots in the first half, although two off them hit the crossbar, including one by Kelly McCloskey in the 12th minute and another Aimee Watanabe in the 18th minute.
Hawaii got on the board in the 66 minute when a UCSB defender tripped Adria Campbell near the top of the box. UH earned the penalty kick and Campbell converted for the team's only goal of the match.
The Rainbow Wahine will now have an eight-day layoff before hosting the Outrigger Hotel & Resorts Shootout, Sept. 23-25. UH starts the tournament versus Butler on Friday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
