Three Straight Road Wins For Rainbow Wahine Tennis

LOGAN, Utah - The Hawai`i women's tennis team edged Utah State, 4-3, to earn its third consecutive road victory, Wednesday, at the Sports Academy. The Rainbow Wahine (8-13) finished 3-1 during their four-match weeklong road trip and have won three straight dual matches for the first time this season.

Hawai`i swept the three doubles matches, including the No. 2 court, where senior Justine Boutet and sophomore Sylvia Jaros defeated Jill Smith and Lauren Monson, 8-3 to improve to a perfect 7-0 this season.

In singles play, the teams battled back and forth after splitting the top four courts. UH senior Lauren Fitzgerald swept Lindsey Bennion, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 while Boutet defeated Carolyn Stephens, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 court. With the Rainbow Wahine holding a slim 3-2 lead in team points, senior Kimberly Curtis provided the match-clinching fourth point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrea Barker at No. 5.

The ailing Jaros pulled out of her singles match for the second straight day due to a nagging wrist injury.

"They played without one of their top players the last time we faced them," UH head coach Carolyn Katayama said about Hawai`i's 7-0 victory over the Aggies (9-10) in March in Honolulu. "So their team was much stronger with her (Courtney Anderson) back in the lineup today and we basically played with our own starters."

The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to wrap up the regular season with matches against Azusa Pacific, April 12, and Boise State, April 19.
