Rainbow Wahine Win Second Straight Road Match

OGDEN, Utah - The Hawai`i women's tennis team picked up its second consecutive victory with a 5-2 road win over Weber State, Tuesday, at the John Edman Tennis Courts. The Rainbow Wahine (7-13) are currently 2-1 on their weeklong road trip which concludes Wednesday at future Western Athletic Conference foe Utah State.

The Rainbow Wahine jumped on the scoreboard early by taking two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 team lead. The team of Justine Boutet and Sylvia Jaros squeaked out a 9-8 victory at the No. 2 court to give UH the team point.

In singles competition, UH won three of the six matches in three-sets, including Lauren Fitzgerald's 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Elana Smit at No. 1. Earlier in the day, Fitzgerald learned that she dropped 17 spots to No. 103 in the latest ITA national rankings.

Senior Kimberly Curtis rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gabriela Venditto at No. 5 and sophomore Kana Aikawa held off Inalise Pienaar, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 at the No. 6 court, which clinched UH's team victory.

"It was a tough match because of the altitude and the weather was in the 50s," UH head coach Carolyn Katayama said. "Its tough to switch from indoors to outdoors but the girls pulled through. The altitude affected Kana a bit because her rallies were long but she played with a lot of confidence in the third set and was able to win the match."

Jaros also tried to make a comeback in singles play but a nagging wrist injury prevented her from completing her match against Alexandra Ilie at No. 2. Over the past five dual meet matches, Jaros was limited to doubles matches only.
