MPSF Championship Scoreboard

BERKELEY, Calif. - All-American senior two-meter Beth Novick and junior utility Shannon Carroll each posted hat tricks as No. 4 Hawai`i pounded Pacific, 15-6, in the opening game of the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at University of California's Spieker Aquatic Complex in Berkeley.

The Rainbow Wahine (19-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Novick scored two quick goals, while Amy Logan and Iefke Van Belkum tallied scores. Pacific (11-20) closed the gap to 4-2 as Jessica Schroeder scored two of her four goals in a 21-second span. UH's Anna Sieprath then found net to give Hawai`i a 5-2 lead after one quarter.

UH took a 7-3 lead into halftime as Novick and Carroll scored in the final three minutes of the second.

Hawai`i came out strong in the third quarter posting four more goals, taking a commanding 11-3. Head coach Michel Roy rested starting goalie Meike De Nooy with 3:35 remaining in the third and inserted backup Jamie Wendell who came in and made seven saves in a quarter and a half.

Colleen Schiman, Carroll, Brittany Dames, and Malia Tarayao all scored in the fourth quarter. UH's 15 goals tie a team-high for the season. Hawai`i defeated Pacific earlier this spring in Honolulu, 15-10.

No. 5 seed Long Beach State knocked off No. 12 seed Arizona State, 8-4, in the second game of the day. UH battles the 49ers in an 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PST) quarterfinal game Friday.
