Magana's Grand Slam Sparks Rainbows' 17-6 Rout Over Spartans

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (20-23, 7-10 WAC) had their biggest offensive explosion of the year, routing the San Jose State Spartans (20-17-1, 9-8) 17-6 at Blethen Field Saturday. Colby Summer (2-4) got the win while Brandon Dewing (5-3) took the loss for SJSU.

Schafer Magana had a huge day, racking up six RBI including a grand slam home run. Matthew Inouye tied a UH record with three doubles, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Joseph Spiers went 4-for-6 with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Isaac Omura and Esteban Lopez added two-hit games while both Erik Ammon and Nathan Thurber had three runs scored.

The first inning saw more offense then the entire Friday game. Magana drove in Ammon to put the `Bows up 1-0, only to see Brandon Fromm sacrifice fly in Anthony Contreras, tying it at one apiece.

The Spartans then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, putting them up 3-1, before the Hawai`i bats came awake in the top of the fifth. Magana drove in Spiers to start the scoring. Then UH got their big scoring play of the inning, as Adam Roberts hit a single to left, scoring both Ammon and Thurber. Roberts advanced to second on the throw home, then was able to come all the way home on a two-base throwing error, giving the Rainbows a 5-3 edge.

The 'Bows had another big inning in the top of the sixth. Spiers started it off with a RBI-double, scoring Lopez. Magana then got his big blast with the bases loaded, hitting a grand slam over the left field wall, blowing the game open at 10-3.

Hawai`i continued the onslaught in the seventh as they started the inning with six-straight hits. Lopez, Spiers, Omura and Roberts drove in a run each, while Inouye had a two-RBI double, completing a six run inning, to push the lead to 16-3.

The Spartans scored three more in the seventh and eighth innings while UH got one more in the ninth, making the final 17-6.

The two teams will close out their series tomorrow at noon at Blethen Field.
