HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (13-12, 1-2 WAC) fell to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (9-15, 2-1 WAC) 9-6 in front of a crowd of 2,682 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Guy McDowell (2-2) took the loss in relief while Steve Alverson (2-2) got the win.
Joseph Spiers went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a run while Isaac Omura had a two-run triple. Gregory Kish added a 2-for-4 game with one run and Rocky Russo had a 2-for-5 game with one RBI.
UH fell behind early for the third time in the series, giving up a solo home run in the second. Louisiana Tech held on to their 1-0 edge until the sixth inning.
Hawai`i got their offensive explosion in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs. Jeff Piaskowski started it off with a sacrifice fly to left before Spiers hit a two-run double to make it 3-1. Adam Roberts then scored on a wild pitch before UH got its big hit by Omura, a two-run double to left center, to make it 6-1.
The Bulldogs got a couple of runs in the seventh to cut it to 6-3, then made their move in the top of the ninth. Louisiana Tech started off the inning with three-straight hit batters to load the bases. After a strikeout, Adam Cobb and Brady Bascle hit back-to-back singles that drove in a combined three runs, tying the game at six. Gil Laird then drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice before Albie Goulder and Mims Boyce closed out the inning, driving in a run each, to make it 9-6. In the bottom of the ninth, LTU retired the first three UH batters, making 9-6 the final.
The Rainbows now head for the road as they will play a mid-week game at Pacific on Tuesday, March 22, before facing Fresno State for a three-game WAC series.
