Beth Novick and
Iefke Van Belkum scored three goals apiece as the Hawai`i women's water polo team blitzed Arizona State this afternoon, 11-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. UH scored 21 seconds into the game after first after taking opening sprint and immediately working the ball into Novick at the 2-meter mark who promptly turned and fired into the goal past ASU goalie Caylinn Wallace.
ASU tied the score at one at the 2:53 mark on a 6-on-5 advantage as Tessa Wyborny whipped in a shot from the right side. The Sun Devils kept the pressure on with another power-play goal one minute later by Kimberlee Stevens to give ASU a 2-1 lead. UH then scored a pair of goals in the final 1:25 of the first quarter by Van Belkum and Novick to put UH up 3-2 at the end of one.
In the second quarter, Van Belkum gave UH its first two-goal advantage on a shot from outside that just squeezed in the left side of the goal. ASU closed the deficit to one with a quick shot in the middle by Ashley Bower. However, UH responded with a man advantage as Van Belkum added her third goal to give UH a 5-3 lead.
