Jose Delgado came off the bench to spark Hawai`i to a four-game non-conference win over Ball State tonight 23-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 2,801 (4,366 issued) watched Hawai`i (13-4) sleep-walk through game one dropping a 30-23 decision while hitting a mere .083 collectively.
Matt Carere got his second straight start at outside hitter and Jacob Schkud got his first start of the season for Matt Bender. Both were ineffective in game one. Bender, who sat out game one, replaced Schkud for the remainder of the match starting with game two.
With the Warriors trailing 15-11 in game two, enter Delgado.
The junior from San Juan, Puerto Rico gave the Warriors a lift posting three kills, three solid reception passes, a block assist, and a big dig.
The Warriors would regroup with Delgado and Bender's energy and win game two, 30-27.
Game three was all UH as the Warriors held the Cardinals to a negative (-.097) hitting percentage en route to a 30-21 win and take a two games to one advantage in the match.
In game four, UH sported its best hitting of the night, swinging at a .308 clip.
Delgado was on fire as he ended the evening hitting .529 slamming down 10 kills in 17 swings with only one error.
Pedro Azenha led the Warriors with 14 kills followed by Bender's 12.
Ball State (10-9) was led offensively by Nick Meyer (15 kills) and Evan Berg (14).
Hawai`i heads to Brigham Young next week for a big Mountain Pacific Sports Federation showdown with the Cougars, March 18-19. UH stops off at UC San Diego for another pair of matches March23 and 25 before returning to Honolulu.
