Rainbow Wahine Capture First Win

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team fought through its early season struggles to capture a decisive 6-1 victory over IPFW, Saturday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine broke a three-match losing streak and improved their season mark to 1-3.

Hawai`i dominated in singles competition, with Sylvia Jaros and Paige Mainor capturing matching 6-0, 6-0 wins over IPFW's Hanna Hager and Jill Carie, respectively. Hawai`i's Kana Aikawa also captured her first singles win of the season, taking the team point at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jessica Vervynckt.

The new pair of Jaros and Michelle Stewart made the most of their opportunity at doubles No. 3, defeating IPFW's Hager and Lisa Bartelheim, 8-2, as part of Hawai`i earning the doubles team point.

"I was pleased with the way our team rebounded from our last match," Hawai`i head coach Carolyn Katayama said. "We regained our focus, and it really showed in the scores today, and in the way we played."

Hawai`i hits the road for its next match, a Feb. 16 match-up at Santa Clara. The next home match for the Rainbow Wahine will be Mar. 16, against Utah at the UH Tennis Complex.
