HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team had its chances, but fell 7-0 to No. 17 California, Saturday morning at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai'i's third consecutive setback to a nationally ranked opponent dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 0-3 in dual match play this year.

Hawai'i senior Lauren Fitzgerald made the most of her chances against the third-ranked singles player in the country, Cal's Susanna Babos, but fell short, 7-6, 6-4. Fellow senior Kimberly Curtis also fought valiantly at No. 4 against the Golden Bears' Cristina Visico before falling in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. In a battle of skilled sophomores, Hawai'i's Sylvia Jaros lost a hard-fought match to Cal's Monica Wiesner, 6-2, 7-5.

However, Hawai'i's competitive fire in singles play did not carry over to the doubles side, as the Rainbow Wahine dropped all three doubles matches.

"There was a lack of focus today," Hawai'i head coach Carolyn Katayama said. "The quality of play suffered as a result. I'm looking to see how the team responds to a challenge like today."

Hawai'i will have a chance to redeem themselves later this afternoon, as the Rainbow Wahine face IPFW at 3 p.m at the UH Tennis Complex. After that, Hawai'i hits the road for its next match, a Feb. 16 match-up at Santa Clara.
