NAMPA, Idaho - The Hawai'i women's track and field team concluded the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with an all-time high ranking of ninth among 11 teams.
Junior Novelle Murray finished third in the weight toss, throwing a school-record 17.09m. Murray tallied six team points for the Rainbow Wahine. UTEP's Nina Schvedoff won the event with a throw of 17.31.
Despite an eighth place finish in the 4x400m relay, the Rainbow Wahine set a school-record time of 3:53.92. Louisiana Tech won the event with a venue record time of 3:39.07.
Freshman Sabrina Reeve finished fifth in the 3000m run in 10:00.83, totaling four team points. Teammate Dana Buchanan just missed out on the scoring with a ninth place finish (10:09.17). UTEP's Adriana Pirtea captured individual honors with a time of 9:46.53.
UH also participated in the distance medley relay and posted a time of 12:34.27, which was the second fastest time in school history. SMU set a venue record finishing in a time of 12:00.28.
Sophomore Kelly Young placed third in the 800m run finals in 2:09.87, also the second fastest recorded time in the UH record books. Nevada's Kali Baker tallied an NCAA Provisional qualifying time of 2:07.90.
Buchanan set a school-record in the mile with a time of 4:53.35, besting her previous record of 4:53.49 set earlier this year. Pirtea captured her second individual title with venue-record 4:45.59.
Junior Patricia Gauthier placed eighth in the pole vault with a jump of 3.52m, good for one team point. Idaho's Melinda Owen won the event with a jump of 3.82m.
LaTech won the women's division with 157 points, easily out-distancing Rice (84) and Fresno State (76).
