Rainbows Turn Tables On Washington State, 6-1

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (6-4) beat the Washington State Cougars (6-6) 6-1 in front of a crowd of 2,633 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Stephen Bryant (2-0) struck out seven without giving up an earned run in 6.0 innings for the victory, while Jayson Miller (0-2) took the loss for Wazzu. Steven Wright pitched 3.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts for the save.

Isaac Omura led the way, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI. Luis Avila added a 2-for-4 game with two runs and a double while Jose Castaneda came off the bench to hit a three-run triple. Joseph Spiers got a hit in the first inning to run his hitting streak to 10 games.

Washington State again jumped out early as Jay Miller hit a single up the middle to score Kaeo Rubin, making it 1-0. But Hawai`i had the answer tonight, as Matthew Inouye and Avila had run-scoring hits in the bottom of the first to put UH up 2-1.

Robbie Wilder added to the lead in the fourth, putting down a bunt for a single that scored Omura, pushing the UH advantage to 3-1. That was all that the pitching combination of Bryant and Wright needed, as they combined for 10 strikeouts without giving up an earned run.

Castaneda then put it away in the eighth, hitting a triple with the bases loaded, giving Hawai`i the final edge of 6-1.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow with Colby Summer going for the Rainbows against WSU's Travis Webb.
