Tulsa Pulls Away From Hawaii, 72-62

Box Score

HONOLULU - Tulsa got a dominating performance from all-conference forward Jillian Robbins to defeat Hawaii, 72-62, Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 10-12 and 6-9 in the WAC with its second straight loss.

Robbins tallied 31 points and 11 rebounds and dominated the paint to lead the Golden Hurricane (17-8, 9-6 WAC) to their third straight victory. For the second straight season the Golden Hurricane swept the season series. Pending the WAC Tournament, it was the final meeting between the teams as conference rivals with Tulsa headed for Conference USA next season.

Four players finished in double-digits for the Rainbow Wahine led by Jade Abele's 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. But it wasn't enough as the Rainbow Wahine got a disappointing effort from its post players, who combined for just eight points and two rebounds, hardly enough to contend with Robbins' performance.

Amy Sanders scored 13 points, Janevia Taylor added 11 points and a season-high five steals, while Milia Macfarlane finished with 10 points and six assists. Tulsa's Megan Moody supported Robbins inside play with accurate outside shooting, finishing with 16 points and four 3-pointers.

It was a see-saw affair in the first half with five ties and 10 lead changes. The Golden Hurricane were the first to pull away when they took a 30-23 lead with six minutes left in the half. UH responded with eight straight points to reclaim the lead, but it was short-lived as Tulsa ended the half with an 11-2 run and took a 41-33 lead at the break. Robbins had 17 by halftime and Tulsa nailed six of its seven 3-pointers.

The Golden Hurricane broke the game open in the second half by shooting 59 percent from the floor en route to building a lead as big as 17 points. Tulsa shot 51 percent for the game and is the only opponent to shoot better than 50 percent against the Rainbow Wahine this season, having also done it in their 83-64 win in Tulsa last month.

The Rainbow Wahine play their final home game of the season when they take on Rice on Saturday, February 26. Seniors Abele and Macfarlane will be honored following the conclusion of the game. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
