EL PASO, Texas - UTEP handed Hawaii its worst road loss of the season with 71-50 rout Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center. The loss dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 10-11 overall and 6-8 in the WAC.
Senior post player Marta Dydek scrored a game-high 22 points, including 18 in the first half, while point guard Shalana Taylor recorded UTEP's first-ever triple double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Miners (11-14, 6-9 WAC) led from start to finish as the Rainbow Wahine struggled throughout, particularly on offense. UH shot a season-low 25 percent and were out-hustled by the Miners, who pulled down 54 rebounds in their final home game of the season.
UH trailed by just six, 31-25, at the break and immediately scored the first five points of the second half and pulled within one. An Amy Sanders 3-pointer at the 16:57 mark made the score, 37-35, but that's when it went south for the Rainbow Wahine. UH tallied just one field over the next 12 minutes as the Miners quickly pulled away.
Phelps scored eight of her points in the first four minutes of the second half to stave off UH and when Charnette Phelps scored a bucket with 14:11 left, the Miners led in double-digits for the first time all game. Phelps finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for UTEP.
Sanders led with 13 points and eight rebounds for the Rainbow Wahine, who remain in seventh in the conference standings. The loss was just UH's second loss to UTEP in 16 all-time meetings as the teams met for the final time as conference foes in the regular-season.
The Rainbow Wahine next return home for the final two home games of the season. UH will first face Tulsa on Thursday, February 24 with tipoff at 7 p.m.
