FREMONT, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's tennis team dropped the first of a five-match road swing, 4-2, to No. 75 Santa Clara, Wednesday morning, at Club Sport. Due to inclement weather, the match was moved from Santa Clara's home venue to indoors.
The teams only played the six singles matches and the Rainbow Wahine won both the Nos. 1 and 6 courts. Senior Lauren Fitzgerald, ranked No. 94 in the latest ITA national rankings, posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Janalle Kaloi, a 2001 Kamehameha Schools graduate.
At No. 6, sophomore Kana Aikawa outlasted Jessie Strunk, 6-3, 6-3. The Broncos captured the other singles spots as Kelly Leathers defeated Sylvia Jaros, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Catherine Cochrane swept Justine Boutet, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Erica Barnes edged Paige Mainor, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 in the deciding match and Kimberly Daniel notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kimberly Curtis at No. 5.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their road trip at Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State, Thursday, Feb. 17. First serve is 2:00 p.m. PST in Las Gatos.
