Rainbow Wahine Thwart Lady Camels, 69-59

Box Score

HONOLULU - Hawai`i overcame one of its worst shooting performances of the season and received an offensive boost from a senior reserve to gut out a 69-59 win over Campbell Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine moved to 6-2 and extended their win streak to four games.

Playing their first home game in 19 days, the Rainbow Wahine led for the majority of the game, but the Lady Camels (3-5) gave UH some anxious moments in the game's waning minutes cutting UH's double-digit lead to just two points on a pair of occasions. UH, however, scored the final eight points of the game to seal the win and their longest win streak since 2002.

UH overpowered the Lady Camels in the middle as Brittany Grice led three Rainbow Wahine in double-figures with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Pam Tambini added her second straight double-double with 11 point and 10 rebounds, while Alofa Toiaivao tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Senior wing Brittney Aiwohi, in her first action of the year, scored a career-high nine points, all in the second half and all from 3-point range, to boost a stagnant UH perimeter game.

Hawaii played much of the game without leading scorer Amy Sanders, who was battling illness. Sanders went scoreless after being limited to just 13 minutes and sitting out the entire second half. It marked just the third time in the last 62 games that Sanders was held without a point.

UH' post players faced constant double-teaming in Campbell's zone defense and in turn Hawaii launched a season-high 25 3-point attempts. But without the dangerous Sanders, the Rainbow Wahine struggled from long range. Hawaii missed 10 of its first 11 3-point attempts in the first frame. Enter Aiwohi, who went 3-of-6 from behind the arc in the second half, including a critical jumper with 1:32 remaining after the Camels cut the margin to two.

The Rainbow Wahine shot just 34.7 percent from the floor, but simply overpowered the Lady Camels inside with eight blocked shots and a 53-37 rebounding edge. UH took the lead for good early in the first half when an 11-0 run put them up, 21-10. The Rainbow Wahine led by five at half and continued to hold Campbell at bay before the Camels cut the lead to two points with just under five minutes and again with just two minutes left.

Hawaii and Campbell will play again on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Fans will receive free admission to the contest with their ticket stub from the men's game versus Utah State which starts at 1:05 p.m.
