HONOLULU - Running back Brian Calhoun rushed for 149 yards and one touchdown and John Stocco passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 24 Wisconsin past Hawai'i, 41-24, in a Friday college football game on ESPN2.
A crowd of 34,031 saw Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan pass for 403 yards (33-of-53) and three scores, two to Davone Bess, in the loss. Receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen led the Warriors with 11 catches for 139 yards. The totals carried Grice-Mullen over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, while Bess finished with four catches for 34 yards. The duo became the first in UH football history to catch for over 1,000 yards each in a season. Bess leads the Warriors with 1,082 yards, while Grice-Mullen reached the 1,061 mark.
Wisconsin (9-3) jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Calhoun scored the first touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run, while Stocco hit Jonathan Orr for a 23-yard touchdown. Hawai'i (4-7) got on the board in between Wisconsin touchdowns when Brennan hit Bess for a 3-yard touchdown.
The Badgers added a field goal early in the second quarter to take a 17-7 lead. After the Warriors missed a 46-yard field goal, Orr caught his second touchdown of the night, a 17-yard strike from Stocco, to help Wisconsin take a 24-7 lead with 2:18 left in the first half. Hawai'i place kicker Dan Kelly added a 42-yard field goal to cut the Wisconsin lead to 14 at the break.
The Wisconsin defense, which sacked Brennan five times in the game, recovered a fumble in UH territory and added a 24-yard field goal to take a 27-10 lead in the third quarter. Hawai'i answered with an 8-yard touchdown toss from Brennan to Bess, to cut the Badger lead to10 midway through the third quarter, but that was as close as it would get.
Bess left the game in the fourth quarter with a bruised lower back. Brennan's first pass of the fourth quarter was intercepted by Wisconsin's Dontez Sanders. Ten plays later, the Badgers scored on a 6-yard run by Booker Stanley and never looked back.
Linebackers Brad Kalilimoku and Kila Kamakawiwo'ole, and safety Lamar Broadway led the Warriors with 10 tackles each.
The Warriors will meet former Western Athletic Conference foe San Diego State in the season finale Saturday, Dec. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
