No. 9 Rainbow Wahine Sweep Through San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 9 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (20-6, 14-0 WAC) swept through the San Jose State Spartans (11-15, 6-8) 30-16, 30-18 and 30-17 in front of a crowd of 745 at Spartan Gym Saturday, running their WAC winning streak to 105 matches.

Juliana Sanders led the charge, hitting .800 with 12 kills and six blocks. Tara Hittle led all players with 15 kills, while hitting .467 with seven digs. Jamie Houston hit .500 with eight kills and six blocks shile Victoria Prince had eight kills, three blocks and five aces in just two games while hitting .462. Kanoe Kamana`o ended the night with 48 assists, seven digs and three blocks while Ashley Watanabe had 14 digs.

The Rainbow Wahine hit .516 as a team, and went the entire match without being blocked for the first time since Oct. 16, 2000.

Houston and Sanders opened the first game on fire, putting away three and two kills, respectively to put UH up 6-1. A three-point run pulled the Spartans within two at 9-7, but Hawai`i answered with a 7-2 spurt that made it 17-10. In all, UH finished with 20 kills and a .515 hitting percentage in the first game, winning 30-16.

In game two, the Rainbow Wahine again started out strong, jumping to a 6-2 edge. Prince later served a six-point run that included two aces to make it 17-8. Hawai`i got it to 24-10 before letting SJSU get back to 27-17 with a 5-1 run of their own. But Hawai`i had too much as a block by Kari Gregory and Cayley Thurlby ended the game 30-18.

Houston got on a hot serving streak early, serving the Rainbow Wahine to a 10-point run that gave UH a 15-2 lead. The Hawai`i bench got involved, led by Nickie Thomas, who had four kills on four swings in the game. UH hit .576 with 20 kills and just one error in the game, taking it 30-17.

The Rainbow Wahine will now return home to face New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech on Thursday, Nov. 17, and Friday, Nov. 18, respectively. Friday's match will be senior night, marking the final regular season home match for Prince, Watanabe and Susie Boogaard.
