HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team completed Day 1 of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Thursday, at the UH Tennis Complex. Rainbow Wahine freshman Erin Katayama advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight B singles draw.

Katayama ousted Ally Taylor of BYU-Hawai`i, 6-1, 6-1. Katayama will play fourth-seeded Sisse Nielsen of San Diego State, Friday.

The tournament includes players from four schools, host Hawai'i, BYU-Hawai'i, San Diego State, and Arizona.

Five other Rainbow Wahine failed to advance in the Round of 16. In Flight A, junior Kana Aikawa was defeated in a tight match by BYUH's Tetyana Bula, 6-4, 6-3. Juliette Mavroleon of Arizona ousted UH sophomore Chloe Bihag, 6-3, 6-3. Newcomer Jacqui Williams lost to Eliska Krausova of San Diego State, 6-0, 6-0. In Flight B, junior Samanta Cappella dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Arizona's Camelia Todorova and sophomore Julia Sandborn fell to San Diego State's Esther Cadua, 6-1, 6-1.

The Rainbow Wahine also entered three doubles teams into the 16-team Doubles Draw. The duo of Aikawa and Cappella won their Round of 16 match by default over a San Diego State duo but lost their quarterfinal round match to BYUH's Bula and Julia Ustyuzhanina.

The tournament continues through Saturday with the Flight A & B singles and doubles championship matches.
