No. 11 Rainbow Wahine Bounce Wolf Pack To Take WAC Lead

Box Score Box Score

HONOLULU - In a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in Western Athletic Conference play, the No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (11-6, 5-0 WAC) swept through the Nevada Wolf Pack (10-6, 5-1) 30-16, 30-7 and 30-17 in front of a crowd of 8,018 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.

The win was the most lopsided victory for the Rainbow Wahine since the inception of rally scoring in 2001, as UH held Nevada to just 40 total points. The previous record was 42 points (30-13, 30-17, 30-17) on Nov. 3, 2001, against Boise State. It also marked the first time UH swept the Wolf Pack since the 2003 WAC Tournament semifinal match in Reno.

Sarah Mason again led the way, putting away 18 kills, six digs and four blocks while hitting .545. Victoria Prince had six kills, four aces and four blocks while hitting .500. Kanoe Kamana`o had 33 assists and nine digs while Ashley Watanabe led the way with 11 digs. Susie Boogaard hit .455 with six kills, four assists and seven digs.

Hawai`i jumped out early in the first game as Mason put away four kills to propell an 8-1 edge, forcing a Nevada timeout. The Pack were able to claw back to 10-5 before another big 7-1 run by the 'Bows made it 17-6. UH never looked back, outhitting UN .412 to .000 in the game to take it 30-16.

Prince opened the second game with two aces before she ran off nine-straight points on her next serve, pushing the Rainbow Wahine to a 20-6 lead. Nevada got their fifth point on a UH hitting error, only to see Kamana`o serve a 10-0 run to end it at 30-7. The seven points allowed was the second-lowest by UH in a rally scoring game to 30. Hawai`i held the Pack to a -.256 hitting percentage in the game.

Nevada was able to take their only leads of the night early in the third game (1-0 and 2-1). They kept competing, as a kill by Carly Sorensen made it 8-8. But a Mason kill put Prince back to serve again. And the senior put up another big run, scoring eight-straight on her serve to make it to 17-8. Nevada was able to make a small push towards the end, but it was too late as the Rainbow Wahine took it 30-17.

Hawai`i will now head back on the road playing two matches in the state of Idaho next week. They'll first play at Idaho on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., before playing Boise State on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
