RUSTON, La. - Hawai'i gained a season-low 280 yards of total offense and allowed Louisiana Tech to gain 476 total yards in a 46-14 loss Saturday night at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Hawai'i (1-4, 1-2 WAC) managed to gain 269 yards passing, but were held to 11 yards rushing, while Louisiana Tech (2-2, 2-0 WAC) gained 327 yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground.
After Hawai'i fumbled the ball away on its opening possession, Louisiana Tech got on the board first on a 33-yard field goal by Danny Horwedel. Hawai'i answered when quarterback Colt Brennan hit Ryan Grice-Mullen on a 4th-down try for a 28-yard touchdown to put the Warriors ahead, 7-3, but not for long. Two plays later, Tech running back Mark Dillard raced 59 yards for a score to put the Bulldogs back on top 9-7, after Tony Akpan blocked the PAT attempt. Dillard finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Tech quarterback Matt Kubik hit Eric Newman for two touchdowns in the second quarter, while Warrior running back Nate Ilaoa ran for a 3-yard score to keep the Warriors within striking distance (14-23) at the break.
But the Bulldogs came out on all cylinders in the second half, scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a commanding 43-14 lead. The Warrior offense was unable to get anything going in the second half. The unit held the ball for nine second-half minutes and gained 90 yards.
Brennan completed 23-of-33 passing for 236 yards and one touchdown. True freshman linebacker Solomon Elimimian led the Warriors with a career-high 13 tackles (seven solo).
Hawaii returns home to celebrate Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 15, in a WAC game against New Mexico State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
