RENO, Nev. - The No. 10 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (16-6, 10-0 WAC) swept through the Nevada Wolf Pack (13-9, 7-4) 30-22, 30-22 and 30-27 in front of a crowd of 918 at Virginia Street Gym Thursday, pushing their WAC winning streak to 101 matches while recording their seventh consecutive sweep.
Victoria Prince led the way, hitting .545 with 14 kills and eight blocks. Sarah Mason had 12 kills, five digs and three blocks while Tara Hittle put up eight kills and 11 digs while hitting .308. Juliana Sanders added seven kills and four blocks while Ashley Watanabe had 10 digs in the back row. Kanoe Kamana`o also played well, putting up 43 assists, seven digs, three blocks and two aces.
Hawai`i jumped out 7-2 to start the first game, scoring two points on aces by Kamana`o. The Wolf Pack were able to pull within two points on a couple other occasions before two-straight aces by Susie Boogaard made it 13-8. The Rainbow Wahine kept their lead around five points before running it to 29-20 on a four-point run capped by a block by Sanders and Boogaard. Nevada was able to put up a couple more points before falling 30-22 on a kill by Hittle.
UH again jumped out quick in game two, going up 5-1 on two kills by Mason and Prince and a block by the same duo. Nevada pulled within two at 10-8, but saw a Rainbow Wahine 4-0 run make it 14-8, forcing a Nevada timeout. Hawai`i had another big 5-0 run, capped by two blocks by Prince that pushed the advantage to 22-12. The closest the Wolf Pack got to from then on was 28-22 before two-straight points put it away at 30-22.
Nevada opened game three with a 3-1 run, only to see UH score four straight, turning it to a 5-3 Hawai`i edge. The two teams then started to trade the lead back-and-forth, with Hawai`i taking a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. The Pack responded with four-straight points to go up 18-15, and would hold on to the lead until a block by Sanders and Boogaard tied it at 23. Nevada answered with a 4-1 run to go up 27-24. But that was when the Rainbow Wahine took over, scoring the next six points, including two kills and a block by Jamie Houston, giving UH the 30-27 game three victory.
Hawai`i will now head to Fresno, Calif., to face Fresno State on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
