SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Hawai`i women's tennis team completed Day 1 of the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships, Thursday. All seven Rainbow Wahine competed in the 128-player singles main draw and 64-team doubles main draw.
Junior Samanta Cappella and newcomer Jacqui Williams won both of their first round matches against Long Beach State players to advance to the Round of 64. Cappella defeated Emmanuelle Tabatrvong, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, while Williams hung on for a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Rachael Porsz. Also advancing via first round byes were junior Kana Aikawa and freshman Erin Katayama.
However, all four lost their Round of 64 matches, including Williams who dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to 13th seed Marielle Greunig of UC Santa Barbara. In other singles action, former Rainbow Wahine Mio Fukushima defeated newcomer Fenja Shaw, 6-2, 6-2, in a Round of 128 match.
In doubles action, the teams of Williams and sophomore Chloe Bihag defeated Cal State Fullerton's Mai-Ly Tran and Cheyenne Inglis, 9-8 (5). Williams and Bihag advance to the Round of 32, Friday, where they will face UC Irvine's Bela Mijic and Clare Fermin. Also advancing to the Round of 32 is the team of Aikawa and Cappella, who defeated the Cal State Fullerton duo of Jessica Winkler and Shaghig Injejikian, 8-4. Aikawa and Cappella will meet Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes on Friday.
The tournament continues on Friday as members of the Rainbow Wahine will compete in the consolation bracket as well as in the doubles main draw.
