LOGAN, Utah -- Charity Weston scored a pair of goals to lead Utah State to a 2-1 win over Hawaii Sunday afternoon at Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field. The Rainbow Wahine (6-7-2, 3-1 WAC) had their season-long three-match win streak snapped, while also dropping their first WAC match of the year.
The Aggies (5-7-3, 2-1 WAC) got on the board first when Weston got behind the UH defense and had a one-on-one with goalkeeper Kori Lu. Lu stopped the first shot attempt but Weston headed in the rebound for a 1-0 Aggie lead in the 13th minute.
UH answered in the 26th minute off a counter attack. Gabina Bohlman eluded a defender at midfield and raced down the middle of the field unmolested before dropping a pass to Adria Campbell in the box. Campbell had her first two shot attempts stuffed but the third shot was charm as she evened the score in the 26th minute.
Weston scored her second goal of the match in the 71st minute off a corner kick. The junior midfielder volleyed a shot into the crowd, then rebounded her own shot just below the crossbar for the eventual game-winner. It was the first goal of the season surrendered in five appearances by Mahie Atay, who started the second half. It also ended her school-record string of 533 straight shutout minutes dating back to last year.
UH played without leading scorer Natasha Kai who sat out her first match following a neck injury sustained Friday at Louisiana Tech. Koren Takeyama started up front in place of Kai, while Taryn Fukuroku and Krisha Kai also saw time up front with regular starter Adria Campbell.
The Rainbow Wahine next face Utah Valley State in a non-conference match Monday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MDT.
