HONOLULU - Jose Delgado slammed down a match-high 20 kills and Lauri Hakala sparked Hawai`i past Penn State in five games tonight in the 11th Outrigger Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center before a crowd of 2,360 (3,945 tickets issued).

In Game One, Penn State jumped out to leads of 12-9 and 15-13 before UH mounted its comeback. The Warriors reeled off the next five points and wnt on to outscore PSU 17-6 to win, 30-21.

Game Two was almost a mirror image of Game One. PSU led 8-5 and 11-9 early before UH started to catch fire. The Warriors took a 20-18 advantage and basically played side-out the remainder of the game to win, 30-28, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Nittany Lions stiffened its defense in Game Three limiting the Warriors to a negative (-.032) hitting percentage, winning, 30-24, to pull within a game.

Game Four saw Penn State take an 18-13 advantage before Hakala was inserted into the lineup for the first time in the match to spell Matt Bender, who missed two exhibition matches last week with a sore shoulder.

Hakala was the spark UH needed as he brought energy back into the Warrior attack. Hawai`i would eventually lose the marathon Game Four by a score of 40-38 sending the match to a deciding fifth game, but UH gained momemtum that would spew over into Game Five.

The Warriors jumped out to 6-3 and 10-5 leads in Game Five to outduel the Nittany Lions in the opening match for both teams. UH a whopping .625 in Game Five (10-0-16) to PSU's .000 (5-5-18).

Maulia La Barre had a solid night at the net hitting .421 (11-3-19), while teammates Pedro Azenha added 18 kills and Bender contributed 12.

The two teams are back in action tomorrow night as Penn State faces off against Brigham Young at 4 p.m., while UH hosts Lewis at 7 p.m.
