Hawaii Rallies For Win at SMU

Box Score

DALLAS - Hawaii scored the final seven points of the game to pull off a 70-63 road win at SMU Thursday night at Moody Coliseum. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the WAC with its first road win of the season.

After getting off to its best start in school history, SMU (12-3, 3-2) dropped its second straight game, while the Rainbow Wahine also snapped the Mustang's nine-game home win streak in UH's final trip to Dallas as a WAC opponent.

For the second game in a row the Rainbow Wahine clawed back from a second-half deficit on the road, but unlike its overtime loss at San Jose State last Saturday, UH had enough firepower to overcome its opponent. Jade Abele scored a game-high 20 points and added 13 rebounds, while UH got a huge boost from Amy Sanders and Alofa Toiaivao who each scored 10 points during the second-half. Sanders finished with 16 points and Toiaivao recorded her third double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

SMU led for much of the game, but the Rainbow Wahine hung within striking distance. UH trailed by eight at halftime and by six, 53-47, with 12 minutes remaining. But that's when UH got on fire, outscoring the Mustangs 14-2 and taking a 61-55 lead. Abele scored eight straight points during the run, while Amy Sanders pulled the Rainbow Wahine ahead with back-to-back 3-pointers.

UH would hold on to the lead, until Katy Cobbs jumper with 2:16 left tied the game at 63-63. A resilient Sander nailed a jumper on UH's next possession, Toiaivao tacked on two more buckets down the stretch and the Hawaii defense clamped down the Mustangs the rest of the way to seal the win.

The Rainbow Wahine wrap up its three-game road trip at conference leader Louisiana Tech (9-4, 5-0 WAC) Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. CST.
