Hawaii Wins Thriller Over LMU, 2-1, in Overtime

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Natasha Kai scored the golden goal 2:17 into overtime to lift Hawai`i to a 2-1 overtime win over Loyola Marymount Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The win capped a perfect 3-0 road trip for the Rainbow Wahine who improved to 3-1-1.

Kai's second game-winning goal in the last three matches, came off the work of fellow forward Koren Takeyama who won a ball near midfield and started on a fast break down the gut of the Lion defense. Takeyama led a through ball to Kai, who beat the goalie on a one-on-one for the game-winner in the 93rd minutes.

It was UH's third straight road win this season, following victories over UCSB and USC, and its school-record sixth straight regular-season road win dating back to last year. The Rainbow Wahine won despite being out-shot 16-6 and surviving two second-half shots by LMU that hit the UH crossbar.

The Lions struck first in the 17th minute off a defensive breakdown by the Rainbow Wahine. LMU goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro sent a long ball that sailed off the head of Jessica Uecker and rolled toward the UH penalty box. Mahie Atay, Krystalynn Ontai and LMU forward Katie Osborne all converged on the ball with Osborne taking advantage of miscommunication by the UH defenders to get a free shot into an open goal from 12 yards out.

The Rainbow Wahine responded three minutes later off some beautiful passing. Midfielder Joelle Sugai fed a ball to the left side of the penalty box to Kai. Kai then chipped a pass to the far post where a streaking Gabrielle Bohlman headed the ball in for the equalizer.

UH returns home to host Long Beach State and nationally ranked Duke in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, September 10-13. The Rainbow Wahine open the tournament versus the Blue Devils on Friday, 7 p.m., at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
