MISSOULA, Mont. - Hawai`i won its fourth straight match with a 3-0 shutout of Gonzaga in the Montana Fall Classic Sunday afternoon at South Campus Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine shook off a slow start before finishing the Classic with a tournament-best 2-0 record.
Forwards Krisha Kai, Natasha Kai and Koren Takeyama each scored a goal to make UH 5-0 in away matches this season. The Rainbow Wahine (7-2-1) also snapped the Bulldogs (7-3) four-match win streak.
The Rainbow Wahine had difficulty penetrating the Gonzaga defense in the first half and weren't able to muster a shot until the 34th minute. UH , however, would score in the very next minute. Natasha Kai sent a header to Koren Takeyama at the top of the box, who tried to create in crowded space. Takeyama's attempt bounced to the left foot of Krisha Kai who nailed a shot from 18 yards out. The ball bounced of the left post and slid clear across the goal line before resting in the right side of the net for Kai's first goal of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine added two insurance goals in the second half, one off a spectacular, diving Natasha Kai header from 10 yards out in the 67th minute and the other from a Takeyama flick in the front of the goal. Both came off crosses by senior midfielder Joelle Sugai.
Goalkeeper Mahie Atay played shutout ball for the second match in a row and finished with three saves in 86 minutes played.
The Rainbow Wahine finish its three-match road swing with a meeting versus BYU Monday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. MST.
